A RARE .360 (2 1/4IN. BLACK POWDER EXPRESS) 1882 PATENT TOPLEVER BACK-ACTION SIDELOCK NON-EJECTOR DOUBLE RIFLE, serial no. 7039,
26 1/4in. black powder only fine damascus barrels with Henry rifling, partially matted broad rib with open sights and two folding leaf sights, white metal inlaid sight lines and marked 100,150 and 200 yards and ramped bead foresight, rib engraved 'ALEXr. HENRY LTD. MAKERS TO HER MAJESTY. EDINBURGH AND LONDON.', rare toplever variant Henry patent action, patent no. 5273 of 1882 with fluted fences, manual safety with blue enamel 'S' detail, cocking-indicators, swept back-action lockplates, fine acanthus scroll engraving with beaded and ropework bordering, brushed finish overall, 14 1/2in. pistolgrip stock (possible replacement) with engraved steel pistolgrip-cap (with trap), sling eyes and horn buttplate, fore-end with grip-catch release lever, the wood with expert repair towards tip, weight 7lb. 13oz.

Provenance: The makers records list the rifle as being completed on the 25th August 1897.



Literature: In his detailed book 'ALEXANDER HENRY RIFLE MAKER', Donald Dallas examines the original patent details for the 1882 design which incorporated the Jones underlever turret arrangement as standard, but noting that the use of a toplever and Scott spindle was available as an alternative (see page 160).
